The victim, Preeti, who was a resident of Koppolu village, was a first year student at the Komatireddy Pratikreddy Vocational College. A youngster named Pawan had been harassing and stalking the girl for the past few months, claiming that he was in love with her.
When Preeti disappeared on July 13, and was later found dead, the girl's parents stated that he was the one who had most likely murdered their daughter.
The incident caused a stir not only for the circumstances under which the victim's death occurred but also because of the alleged negligence of the local authorities in handling the matter. Kethepalli SI Ramakrishna had reportedly been negligent in his handling of the case as well.

Reddy announced that aid of Rs 50,000 would be given to the bereaved family on behalf of the Congress SC cell and assured them that the party would stand by them.
