Citing security concerns, Panchayat Raj Minister K Jana Reddy on Thursday said that the 48-hour hunger fast has been cut short due to the serial blasts in Mumbai.
Addressing the gathering at the premature conclusion of the hunger camp, Jana Reddy stated that the Congress party in the state can be strengthened only with the formation of Telangana. He also called on all political parties to make collective efforts towards the formation of a Telangana state and to mount pressure on the Centre.
The Minister also appealed to the Congress High Command to fulfil the long-pending aspiration of the region's people by forming a Telangana state, and to respect their sentiments.
"The formation of a separate state will strengthen the Congress' position in the region, and people will repose their faith in the Congress and strengthen it in the next elections," he said.
Rajya Sabha Member K Kesava Rao said, "The High Command has to either announce a Telangana state or accept our resignations."
He said Congress legislators had submitted their resignations not to blackmail the High Command, but only to fulfil the aspirations of the people.
R Damodar Reddy said Telangana leaders would not allow Seemandhra leaders inside Gandhi Bhavan if the High Command fails to announce a clear decision on Telangana statehood by August 1. e warned that the Telangana leaders would picket the state capital on August 1 if the Centre fails to make an announcement on the demand.
