Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao today urged the Centre to name the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) in Hyderabad after former President A P J Abdul Kalam in recognition for the latter's services to the country.
In a letter addressed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday, KCR urged the PM to rechristen the DRDO as a fitting tribute to Kalam's services in the defence sector.
India had successfully launched myriad prestigious projects and scaled many heights through the DRDO, and it was a known fact that Kalam was the director of the prominent institution at the time that it carried out many projects, the Chief Minister stated. Kalam's guidance and his able leadership of the defence sector at the national level had left an indelible mark on the country, KCR added.
Giving Kalam's name to the DRDO, one of India's most prestigious organizations, would then be apt and inspirational for posterity, he remarked.
He also attributed the establishment of various defence-related organizations such as DRDL, Midhani, RCI and ICBM in Hyderabad to Kalam's efforts, and mentioned that the former President had an inseparable bond with Hyderabad after serving from here for about two decades.
