Amidst all the celebrations that have recently beseized the region after the Centre announced its decision to allow the formation of Telangana, there are voices still that talk of caution and consequences. It has been reported that there might still be a chance wehreby the Telangana Bill will experience a fallout in the Parliament.
For instance, Samajwadi party leader Mulayam Singh says that his party has always been against the formation of smaller states, as they lag behind and weaken the socio-economic status of the country in whole.
To illustrate his statement, Yadav went ahead and cited examples of Chattisgarh, Jharkhand and Uttarakhand, which have clearly fallen behind in terms of economic development.
It may be mentioned that the Samajwadi party has 22 MPS in the Lok Sabha, from Uttar Pradesh, where the party is in power.
Yadav's alleged animosity towards the prospect of the formation of smaller states could have stemmed from the fact that Yadav's rivals, Mayawati of the Bahujan Samaj Party, and Ajit Singh of the Rashtriya Lok Dal have been demanding the division of UP into smaller states.
In fact, the Centre's announcement about Telangana has led to growing-lazy activists for smaller states dusting off their banners, and practicing their slogan-shouting skills.
After the Centre's announcement on Tuesday, the Gorkha Janmukti Morcha announced an indefinite strike in Northwest Bengal in order to renew its struggle for a Gorkhaland.
Also, the CPI (M) which has 16 MPs in the Lok Sabha is against smaller states. The party's spokesperson Basudeb Acharia had this to say about Telangana "We have not taken a call on it (as there is no proposal yet). But our stand against Telangana remains the same."
