Blind Students Stage T-Protest

Students of Government Blind School, Darusshifa, formed a human chain to protest for a separate Telangana.
Hyderabad | 22nd February 2011
Extending support to the 48-hour bandh call given by Telangana Political Joint Action Committee, students of Government Blind School, Darusshifa, on Tuesday staged a dharna on the road by forming a human chain. Their protest led to traffic being disrupted for more than one hour.

As news of their protest spread, it attracted a large number of pro-Telanagana activists.

Raising 'Jai Telangana' slogans, the students accused both the Centre and the state governments of being responsible for the present mess, and demanded that the Centre introduce a Telangana bill without delay.

With the students resorting to the blockade, the traffic on main roads of Darusshifa towards Salar Jung Museum came to a grinding halt, putting passengers and commuters to a lot of inconvenience.

The police had a tough time controlling the traffic and bringing it back to normal.

"The United Progressive Alliance government is busy in Parliament, clearing its image in the 2G spectrum scam and the CWG scandal, and is pushing the Telangana issue to a corner," alleged R Shiva, a blind protester.

Another visually-challenged student, G Laxman, said that leaders of Telangana must make concerted efforts, setting aside differences, to mount pressure on the Central government for a Telangana bill in Parliament.

He appealed to Congress president Sonia Gandhi and Seemandhra leaders to extend support for Telangana state formation, which, according to him, would be "a great gift for blind students, on the lines of their eyesight".

Justice L Narasimha Reddy of the AP High Court on Thursday described the 'secret' contents of the Srikrishna Committee as full of lies and mind-boggling descriptions of non-existent things. "It is unfortunate that this report and its related exercise was presided over by a former judge of the Supreme Court," he told additional solicitor general M Raveendran. The issue came up when the judge was hearing a petition filed by former Congress MP M Narayan Reddy demanding chapter 8 of the committee report, which was submitted to the Centre in a sealed envelope, be made public. "This committee has spent Rs 40 crore of public money for preparing its report. Any person with a semblance of faith in the system of democracy would lose faith in it. The report prepared by the front office of an MP would have been more sensible than this report. Even the high command of a political party would have hesitated to prepare such a report," he noted.
