A delegation of the New Telangana Auto Drivers Trade Union (NTADTU), led by their president Syed Jameel, on Wednesday, called upon Labour minister Danam Nagender at his residence, alleging harassment by the city police in the name of e-challans.
They demanded that the state government instruct the police to refrain from harassing the auto drivers. They also demanded the constitution of an Auto Drivers Labour Welfare Board for the welfare of the drivers, and pointed out that other states, too, have such boards.
There are 1.5 lakh auto drivers in the Telangana region, who are working hard in the city for their livelihood, they said.
They alleged that the authorities of APSRTC and RTA were also harassing the auto drivers in the name of challans, and seizing their vehicles, claiming that the corporation has been running losses due to the autos plying in the state. They also appealed for a Rs. 5 lakh ex-gratia to be paid to the families of the drivers who get killed due to road accidents.
Union state general secretary A Ravi and others were also part of the delegation. (INN)
