Telangana Auto Driver Unions JAC convener Mohd Amanullah Khan has threatened to go on a fast-to-death if the existing auto fares in Hyderabad were not increased to be on par with those in the neighbouring states within a fortnight.
Addressing mediapersons today, Khan said that there had been no upward revision of auto fares since February 2014, due to which auto drivers in the capital were finding it difficult to transport passengers as per the metre-determined fares.
He alleged that the traffic police and RTA officials were booking cases against auto drivers if the latter demanded money above the metre-determined fares, and were collecting heavy fines from them. Recently the Nampally Traffic Police had booked a case against a driver named Jangaiah for demanding extra fare, and the driver was also sent to jail for eight days, Khan said.
