Telangana has said that the impounding would cause the submerging of several villages in the Nalgonda district and cause misery to their inhabitants.
Hyderabad | 16th September 2014
The Government of Telangana has requested the Government of Andhra Pradesh to avoid water being impounded into the Pulichintala project as it would cause the submerging of several villages in the Nalgonda district and thereby cause misery to the inhabitants of these villages.
In a letter, Telangana Chief Secretary Dr. Rajiv Sharma informed his AP counterpart I Y R Krishna Rao that the Dr. K L Rao Sagar Pulichintala Project on river Krishna was a project commissioned just a little before the bifurcation of Andhra Pradesh, with a total storage capacity of 45 TMC of water.
The letter says that part of the submergence would be in the Nalgonda district of Telangana, and the other part would be in the Guntur district of AP.
Dr. Sharma said that due to the copious releases from Nagarjuna Sagar, the water would be impounded into the Pulichintala project.
He pointed out that Andhra Pradesh had started impounding the water without providing resources for the rehabilitation and resettlement of the affected villagers in the Nalgonda district.
Dr. Sharma requested the Chief Secretary of Andhra Pradesh to direct the concerned staff of Pulichintala not to impound water without completing rehabilitation and resettlement work in the district of Nalgonda.
In an identical letter, the Chief Secretary, while bringing the issue to the notice of Alok Rawat, Secretary Water Resources, Govt. of India, also requested him to direct the Govt. of AP not to go ahead with the impounding of the water.
Irrigation Minister T Harish Rao spoke to Aditya Nath Das, Secretary Irrigation, Govt. of AP, to resolve the issue.
He also demanded compensation for the affected people due to the submerging of villages. (INN)
