The Centre today revealed that the reorganisation of the Assembly seats in both Telangana and neighbouring Andhra Pradesh would be taken up only after 2026.
This information was revealed by the Centre while it was replying to a question raised by TPCC chief and MP A Revanth Reddy on the matter in the Lok Sabha.
While stressing on the need to increase the number of Assembly seats in Telangana from the existing 119 to the proposed 153 as per the AP Reorganisation Act, the MP asked the Modi government when the process of delimiting the seats would be taken up.
Replying to his question, Union Minister of State for Home Affairs Nityanand Rai said that though there were no immediate plans to take up the delimitation of Assembly seats in the two Telugu states, the exercise would be held as per the norms of Article 170 of the Indian constitution only after 2026.
Rai added that the total number of seats in the Assembly of each state would be readjusted after the publication of the population data in the 2026 Census. This means the new constituencies will only become functional by 2031.
According to the AP Reorganisation Act, while Telangana is to get 153 Assembly seats, AP is to get 225.
The delimitation issue has been raked up by many leaders over the years. Recently, Congress leader Marri Shashidhar Reddy had also urged the Centre to
start the process of delimiting the number of Assembly seats in Telangana and Andhra Pradesh alongside the proposed delimitation process to be taken up in undivided Jammu and Kashmir.
