Congress leader Marri Shashidhar Reddy today urged the Centre to take up the process of delimiting the number of Assembly seats in the Telugu states of Telangana and Andhra Pradesh alongside the proposed delimitation process to be taken up in undivided Jammu and Kashmir.
Referring to the Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation Act of 2014, Reddy said, "The Act provides for the increase in the number of Assembly seats in both states - in Telangana from the existing 119 seats to 153, and in AP from the existing 175 seats to 225. This proposed increase in the number of Assembly seats for the two states does not even violate Article 170 of the Indian Constitution - the Article clearly stipulates that the legislative Assembly of a state cannot consist of more than 500 and less than 60 members."
He then revealed that in September 2018, he had filed a PIL on the delimitation of the seven mandals of old Khammam district and added that the EC had issued a notification to avoid the ensuing court case in an illegal manner.
The leader, who was left unhappy with the
appointment of A Revanth Reddy to the post of TPCC head, made quite the splash when he tendered his resignation from the post of state Congress Election Coordination Committee chairperson after the decision was made public just days ago.
Shashidhar Reddy had been pushing the case of more senior leaders, demanding that a "party loyalist" be given the post.
