Hyderabad | 12th November 2011
Nearly 20 members of the Telangana Advocates' Joint Action Committee were arrested when they tried to disrupt a book release function held by the Vishalandhra Maha Sabha at Basheerbagh Press Club in Hyderabad on Saturday.
The advocates stormed into the auditorium while the book, written by author Chakravarty, was about to be unveiled.
Raising "Jai Telangana" slogans, the advocates tried to go up to the podium to snatch copies of the book. However, they were arrested by the police, and were shifted to a nearby police station.
Later, addressing the gathering, Vishalandhra Maha Sabha representative Parakala Prabhakar condemned the incident. He said that certain activists were trying to suppress the voice of people who are against the division of Andhra Pradesh.
Parakala said that the Vishalandhra Maha Sabha advocates the motto of "one language, one state", and that therefore, opposes the bifurcation of the state.
He claimed that a majority of people in the Telangana region, too, are against the separation.
Parakala said that the Constitution has given all citizens equal rights to express their opinion without any fear or favour. However, some organisations and individuals have been repeatedly trying to suppress the voice of others, he said.
Regarding the book that was released, he said it counters the claim that injustices have been done to the Telangana region.
