The Congress on Monday accused the Telugu Desam Party of
raising the Babli Project issue with an eye on the forthcoming by-elections.
Talking to media persons, senior Congress leader and AICC secretary Ponguleti Sudhakar said that the TDP was in power when the foundation stones for the Babli Project were being laid in 2001.
Ponguleti questioned why the TDP was silent at that time and why was it bent on raising the issue with by-elections just round the corner.
The senior Congress leader accused the TDP of 'pretending' to be interested in the welfare of the people of Telangana, and said that the ground reality is that the party simply did not care about the people.
He said that a team of Congress leaders, led by himself, had met Maharashtra Chief Minister Ashok Chavan on May 22. Chavan had assured the Congress delegation that injustice would not be done to the people of Andhra Pradesh by the completion of works on the Babli Project.
Ponguleti said the Congress is working actively to protect the interests of the state but the TDP is just using non-existent 'issues' to try and defame the Congress.
