The Telugu Desam Party on Thursday indicated that it would field its candidates in all the 12 Assembly constituencies in the Telangana region, for which elections are due.
Talking to reporters, TDP president N Chandrababu Naidu expressed the party's willingness to contest the by-polls, and said that the decision will be taken keeping in mind the desire of the party members.
He said, "The party is in favour of contesting the by-elections. I will hold a further round of talks with the party's lower rung leaders, and take a final decision in the next few days.”
The by-polls to the 12 seats in Telangana region were necessitated after pro-Telangana Members of the Legislative Assembly resigned in an attempt to pressurise the Centre over the separate statehood issue. Among the 12 seats, 10 were held by the Telangana Rashtra Samithi, one by the BJP and one by the TDP MLA Ch Ramesh who later quit the party and joined the TRS.
The resignations were accepted by Assembly Speaker Kiran Kumar Reddy.
The by-elections are likely to be held next month, as the process needs to be completed before August.
