It has come to light that many taxpayers are receiving fake notices purportedly from the Income Tax department. The fake notices carry the department insignia but incorrect designations and names of fictitious officers. The fake notices invoke provisions of the Income Tax Act and the Benami Prohibition Act.
The department has advised taxpayers not to respond to such notices, and to first contact the Public Relations Officer B V Vinod (040-23425200, 8985970011) or the office name mentioned in the fake notice for verification before taking any action. They may also lodge a police complaint if they feel necessary.
