SC Dismisses Plea for Ban on Kancha Ilaiah's Book
The Supreme Court dismissed a petition seeking a ban on the book "Saamaajika Smugglerlu Komatollu" written by Kancha Ilaiah, citing freedom of expression.
The Supreme Court today dismissed a petition filed by the Arya Vysya leader and advocate Veeranjaneyulu seeking a ban on the book "Saamaajika Smugglerlu Komatollu" written by controversial academic Kancha Ilaiah.
In a significant judgment, the bench headed by Chief Justice Deepak Mishra said that it could not order a ban on the book just because it had created a controversy, since oing so would be curtailing freedom of expression.
The apex court, however, observed that authors should be self-restrained.
The Arya Vysya Association leader had filed the petition last month pleading for a ban on the book, contending that it insulted their caste.
