Suicide In State Allegedly Over 500-1000-Note Ban

A 55-year-old woman named Vinoda committed suicide allegedly after PM Modi's order banning Rs. 500 and Rs. 1,000 denominations of the currency.
Hyderabad | 11th November 2016
A 55-year-old woman named Vinoda from Shenagapuram village in the Mahbubnagar district today committed suicide allegedly due to the recent demonetisation of the 500 and 1,000 notes by the Centre.

As per the preliminary reports of the police, Vinoda sold her land for Rs 56.40 lakhs for her husband's medical treatment, but could spend only around Rs. 2 lakhs on it. The remaining lump sum amount was in cash. After Prime Minister Narendra Modi's announcement of the demonetization of Rs. 500 and Rs. 1,000 currency notes on Tuesday night, she assumed that the whole amount was irredeemable.

She apparently took the PM's words "all cash in these denominations are no longer a legal tender" literally without the context, and thought that all her hard-earned money was worthless.

Later that night, Vinoda hanged herself after rest of her family went to sleep.

The Police have taken custody of the body for further investigation.
