In a major breakthrough for the TRS government and the Muslim community in Telangana, the Sudhir Commission - appointed for analysing the viability of the 12% Muslims reservation demand - recommended 9% to 12% reservations for the empowerment of Mulsim minorities for social and educational development in the State.
In a report submitted to the Telangana government, the Sudhir Commission advised the State government to emulate the Tamil Nadu government in providing reservations for Muslims and urge the Centre to make necessary amendments to the Constitution in order to fructify the recommendation.
It favoured a separate sub-plan for minorities similar to the SC/ST sub-plans, and recommended the goverment to extend the reservations to jobs, training, land and other facilities like education, health and basic amenities.
It came up with 12 recommendations, including constitution of a special commission for providing equal opportunities, committee to provide all facilities to the Muslim populace besides offering the best educational opportunities by setting up high schools and colleges in a big way.
As 85% of Muslims in Telangana were backward in terms of education and wealth, there was a dire need of providing reservations to an adequate extent, the Commission opined. Besides including Mehar caste of Mulsims in to SCs for reservations, the Commission suggested that separate committees be formed for implementing recommendations of the Sachar and Kundu Commissions as well.
The other recommendations of the Commission include: A commission to protect WAKF assets, providing more quota for Muslim women in jobs, and setting up more High Schools and colleges for Muslim women.
