The special packs of vegetables doled out by the government have been found to have substandard vegetables.
The Agriculture and Marketing Department had announced, 2 days earlier, that it supply special vegetable packs at Rs. 99 to the citizens of Hyderabad, who are reeling under sky-rocketing prices.
The Rs. 99 package contains 2 kg of onions, 250 grams of chillies, and 1 kilo each of tomatoes, brinjals and potatos, a cauliflower, a cabbage and carrots, at all Rythu Bazaars in the city (Falaknuma, Mehdipatnam, Erragadda, Kukatpally, Alwal, Saroornagar, Vanislipuram, R K Puram and Qutubullahpur).
The second package, which costs Rs. 49, contains 1 kg of onions, 250 grams of green chillies, and 500 grams each of tomatoes, brinjals, potatoes and carrots, and a cauliflower and a cabbage each.
The announcement drew sighs of relief from the citizens when it was made, which have turned into groans, thanks to the quality of the vegetables in the packs.
Compared to vegetables available in the open market, the ones in the package are quite sub-standard.
When the fact was brought to the notice of the Director of Marketing and Agriculture Department S Mohsin Hashmi, he claimed that the vegetables have been packaged under the supervision of officers, and refused to believe that there was anything bad about their quality.
He said that there have been no complaints from the buyers, despite the contents of the package being shown to him.
