As the holy month of Ramzan approaches, Hyderabad's delicacy haleem is witnessing a significant price hike, primarily due to rising mutton costs and concerns over bird flu.
Traditionally consumed during Iftar to break the fast, haleem holds a special place in the hearts of Hyderabadis. This year, however, enthusiasts are facing increased prices.
The flu scare has further influenced consumer behaviour, leading to a decline in chicken haleem sales. Historically favoured for its affordability, with plates priced around Rs 50, chicken haleem is now less popular due to health concerns. Many hoteliers and caterers are in fact contemplating a complete halt on chicken haleem sales this year to avoid potential losses. This has in turn bolstered demand for mutton haleem, despite its higher price typically starting at Rs 200 per plate.
The combination of increased ingredient costs and the bird flu outbreak has created a complex scenario for both vendors and consumers. While haleem remains an integral part of Ramzan festivities in Hyderabad, patrons may need to adjust their budgets to continue enjoying this cherished dish.
The holy month of Ramzan is expected to commence around March 2, subject to the sighting of the crescent moon.
