The battle for Telangana intensified dramatically after students belonging to various colleges affiliated to universities in the region staged protests around the periphery of the state Assembly on Monday.
The waves of protests ultimately forced the police to lob around 13 shells of teargas to calm down the agitating students at the Nizam College Hostel. One student was injured due to the incident.
The first wave of protest came in the form of girl students from Osmania, Kakatiya and M G universities trying to barge inside the Assembly premises.
The police successfully thwarted that attack by arresting scores of students from among the protestors. They were shifted to the Nampally police station.
The students were also demanding a resolution in the Assembly on the Telangana bill. The students raised 'Police Go Back' and 'Jai Telangana' slogans.
The police tried to pacify them, but the intensity grew, and the slogan-shouting became increasingly strident.
Sensing trouble, the police hastily arranged barricades to block the hostel gates. This acted like a trigger with the students trying to force their way out. As the police personnel braced themselves and put up a defensive position with their fibreglass shields and batons ready, the students surged forward.
They managed to pull down the hastily put-up barricades and surge forward.
The students then resorted to pelt stones at the police who deftly managed to block the flying missiles with their fibreglass shields. This continued for a few minutes.
The police then started lobbing teargas shells at the students, forcing them to turn back and return to the hostel premises.
Earlier at the Assembly premises, B Lakshmi and Vijayalakshmi told media persons that they were marching towards the Assembly to press the government to accept their demands, the main one being the introduction of the Telangana bill in the budget session of the Parliament. As part of this demand, the students also sought the state government to do its bit by introducing a resolution in the state Assembly, urging the Centre to table the bill.
The students also warned the government of dire consequences and relentless protests till their demands are met.
