Not surprisingly, there was plenty of outpouring of grief from the South film industries, too.
Actor-turned-politician Kamal Haasan, who worked with Sridevi in Sadma, the Hindi remake of their 1982 Tamil film Moondram Pirai, wrote on Twitter that the lullaby Suramayi Ankhiyon Mein from the movie haunts him now.
"Have witnessed Sridevi's life from an adolescent teenager to the magnificent lady she became. Her stardom was well deserved. Many happy moments with her flash through my mind, including the last time I met her. Sadma's lullaby haunts me now. We'll miss her," Haasan wrote on Twitter.
Actor Rajinikanth, who was paired with Sridevi in several hit movies, too mourned the death. Condoling the sudden demise, Rajini said in a tweet, "I'm shocked and very disturbed."
Yesteryears Telugu superstar Krishna also expressed shock on hearing of the death. Talking to a news channel, Krishna said that Sridevi was known to him since her childhood as her parents lived near his house. He said that he had acted with her in 31 Telugu films.
