Six persons were killed on the spot and 14 others received grievous injuries in an accident that occurred in the early hours of Sunday at Moddulacheruvu under Munagala mandal in Suryapet district.
According to the police, the accident took place when an APSRTC bus (AP16Z 0216) hit a stationary lorry from behind.
The Avanigadda depot bus was proceeding towards Hyderabad from Vijayawada. It hit the lorry in the process of overtaking another bus near Munagala. Half of the bus was damaged severely.
About 36 passengers were in the bus when the accident took place. The dead persons were identified as Edukondalu (the lorry driver), Rani (Suryapet), Sathaiah (Kodad), N V Prasad (Avanigadda) and M M Prasada Rao (Avanigadda). The police shifted the injured persons to the Kodad and Suryapet government hospitals. The doctors said that the conditions of four persons among the injured were serious. The police said that they shifted Munagala Ramadevi and Peddakudi Subbarao from Kosuru village in Krishna district, and Rani from Mallavaram village in Thallada mandal in Khammam district, to Hyderabad for better treatment as their conditions were serious.
Suryapet district superintendent of police Prakash Jhadav examined the accident place.
