Rising Hyderabad star - actually, she's not a "rising" star any more - P V Sindhu today created history by becoming the first Indian woman to reach the semi-finals of the World Badminton Championships, in Guangzhou, China.
After stunning the defending champion and second seed Wang Yihan yesterday to reach the quarterfinals, the World No. 12 and tenth seed today extended her unbelievable run by one more match, beating former World No. 1 Shixian Wang, seeded seventh, 21-18, 21-17.
The Telugu girl maintained a lead over Wang almost all through, never letting the latter settle down or find her rhythm.
Sindhu is assured of a bronze medal now, and will be only the third Indian to bring back a bronze from the World Championships, the two earlier instances where India won medals at the championships being when Prakash Padukone won the mens' singles bronze in 1983, and Jwala-Ashwini won another in 2011.
