Vamsadhara Dispute Tribunal Meets
Vamsadhara River Water Dispute Tribunal, formed to settle disputes regarding sharing of waters of the Vamsadhara River, will start hearings from 23rd November.
The Vamsadhara River Water Dispute Tribunal directed Andhra Pradesh and Orissa to file objections before the tribunal on Thursday, over the sharing of waters within 6 weeks.
The Tribunal, which met for the first time since its establishment, met the irrigation ministers and officials of both the states. Tribunal Chairman Justice BN Agarwal stated that the tribunal will begin hearings in the case from 23rd November.
Major Irrigation Minister Ponnala Lakshmaiah and irrigation engineers attended the meeting on behalf of the state government.
The Centre constituted the tribunal under the Inter-State River Water Disputes Act, following the directions of the Supreme Court.
The Orissa government had petitioned the centre and the Supreme Court in 2006 to constitute a tribunal for proper distribution of waters from the Vamsadhara river, and had demanded that the Rs. 920 crores irrigation project, across the river as a part of the Jalayagnam project, should be stopped.
