The Hyderabad police filed criminal cases against a galaxy of top political leaders upon the directions of the Ranga Reddy District & Sessions Court, including under Section 124-A of the IPC (sedition).
The Saroornagar police filed the cases against Congress Vice-President Rahul Gandhi, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, CPM General Secretary Sitaram Yechury, CPI Leader D Raja, Congress leaders Ajay Maken and Anand Sharma, JNU Student Union leader Kanhaiya Kumar and JNU student Umar Khalid, and others.
The cases were filed upon the directions of the court of the XII Metropolitan Magistrate, who was responding to petitions filed by a couple of city advocates that the students had denounced the hanging of Afzal Guru and had raised slogans against India, and that the political leaders had all supported them.
