The Election Commission of India on Thursday announced the schedule for elections for six seats of the Telangana Legislative Council and four seats of the Andhra Pradesh Council.
Following the expiry of the terms of Telangana MLCs K R Amos, Nagapuri Rajalingam, Peer Shabbir Ahmed, Balasani Laxminarayana, Bodakunti Venkateswarlu, K Yadav Reddy and Dharmapuri Srinivas, their seats fell vacant on March 29. Since the number of MLCs to be elected by MLAs has been fixed as 14 as per the Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation Act, the Union Home Ministry has advised the ECI to fill only six MLC seats. Therefore, the ECI has announced the schedule to fill these seats.
Similarly, the ECI also announced the schedule for elections by MLAs to fill three additional seats of the Andhra Pradesh Legislative Council. Another seat, which fell vacant due to the death of MLC Paladugu Venkata Rao on 19th January, will also be filled.
The notification for these MLC polls will be issued on May 14, and the last date for filing nominations will be May 21. The nominations will be scrutinised on May 22, and the last date for withdrawal of candidature will be May 25. Polling will be held on 1st June, and the counting of votes will commence on the same day at 5 pm. (INN)
