In a relief to Chief Minister Revanth Reddy, the Supreme Court today dismissed a defamation petition filed by the Telangana BJP unit against him.
The BJP had approached the apex court challenging a Telangana High Court order that had earlier rejected its plea regarding remarks made by Revanth Reddy during the election campaign.
The party had alleged that Reddy, while addressing voters, had claimed that the BJP would amend the Constitution if it came to power.
A bench led by Chief Justice of India B R Gavai, after hearing the arguments, declined to intervene, observing that courts should not be turned into political battlegrounds.
The bench also said that politicians should not be "too sensitive" to such remarks, and reiterated its reluctance to step into political disputes.
With this ruling, the Supreme Court upheld the High Court's dismissal of the BJP's petition.
