The Congress high command's announcement that the issue of Andhra Pradesh's bifurcation will be sorted out by the 28th of this month has led to a flurry of meetings, protests, and undbridled speeches by all political leaders in the state.
The Congress party's encouraging stance on Telangana during the recent times is causing particular discomfort amongst political leaders who maintain that the growth of the state, and its people, depends on it not being split. These pro-Samaikhyandhra leaders are conducting a meeting today at the Ministers' Quarters, and, around 30-40 Congress MPs, MLAs, MLCs and other leaders against AP-bifurcation are expected to be in attendance.
According to sources, the meeting has 3 key objectives - to find a way to keep Andhra Pradesh united, to decide what to do in case Telangana state is granted, and, to discuss the possibility of splitting from Congress in the eventuality of AP-bifurcation.
Meanwhile, students from Osmania University have landed up outside the Ministers' Quarters to try and stop the meeting, but are facing stiff opposition from the police. These por-Telangana students claim that holding a meeting of this kind, when statehood for Telangana seems this close to being annouced, is "intentionally provocative", and should not be allowed.
