The sub-standard material of the pipes used by contractors in laying the 2,700 km pipelines, meant for supplying potable water to all households in Hyderabad, was exposed as the pressure along a pipe (of the project) in Uppal spiked, causing the pipe to burst open immediately after Telangana Transport Minister P Mahender Reddy inaugurated the project.
The minister inaugurated the project which was laid at a cost of Rs. 3 crores at Uppal Hills under the limits of the Uppal Municipal Corporation. The ceremony was attended by Malkajgiri MP Malla Reddy and local MLA N V S S Prabhakar.
The pipe broke immediately after five minutes of the inaugural, and the water came out gushing from the pipeline. Several gallons of water got wasted.
As the pressure reading in the water gauge was well within the bursting pressure of the pipe, several people alleged that the contractors had used substandard material in constructing the pipeline.
The GHMC is currently looking into the issue and will measure the quality of the material and the extent to which the rest of the pipeline will be damaged if the project continues.
