Guntur MP Rayapati Sambasiva Rao on Friday resigned from the primary membership of the Congress party, in protest against the Union Cabinet's decision to bifurcate Andhra Pradesh.
Talking to reporters here, Rayapati said, "By taking a decision to bifurcate the state, the Congress party has done injustice to Telugu people. The Congress party will be routed in the Seemandhra region." He further added that the the party would not achieve its goal of winning the maximum number seats in Telangana, as nearly 30% of the population in the region hails from Seemandhra, and they would vote "against the party".
Rayapati also said that several other leaders from the Seemandhra region would resign from the Congress party.
Surprisingly, Rayapati also praised Narendra Modi, the Prime Ministerial candidate of the BJP, a party which openly supported Telangana.
It may be mentioned here that Rayapati had already sent his resignation to Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar earlier, which is yet to be accepted. (INN)
