The Archaeological Survey Of India (ASI) seems to have finally woken up to the fact that people with physical handicaps have as much right to visit historical monuments as the rest of the citizens.
This was evident from the fact that officials of the department on Friday started work on a ramp leading up the stairs of the historic Charminar for physically challenged and infirm visitors. The officials also arranged 2 wheelchairs at the tourist centre.
ASI official in-charge of Charminar, Kotumba Rao, told media persons that the decision to build the ramp and provide wheelchairs came after the officials witnessed the difficulties faced by physically infirm people in their trip to the historical monument. Kotumba Rao added that after the ramp was built, the tourists would be able to admire the intricate patterns inside the monument which were hitherto difficult to view.
