MLAs Support PRP-Congress Merger
Elected representatives of the Praja Rajyam Party (PRP) on Monday authorized their party President, K Chiranjeevi, to merge the party with the Congress.
Elected representatives of the Praja Rajyam Party (PRP) on Monday authorized their party President, K Chiranjeevi, to merge the party with the Congress.
Talking to mediapersons after emerging from a general body meeting, Chiranjeevi stated that the legislators who were present at the meeting had authorized him to merge the party with Congress. He also said that all the PRP MLAs unanimously supported the merger with the Congress party.
The actor-turned-politician called upon the party members to continue carrying forward the party ideal of social justice. He also exhorted them to continue with the party's welfare programs even after the merger was formalized.
Chiranjeevi made it clear that Monday's meeting was not a 'farewell' to the PRP, and that the party will continue within the Congress party.
The Tirupati MLA extended his gratitude to the party leaders and cadre for their cooperation, and their support in times of crisis.
The PRP chief also lauded his MLAs for playing a constructive role as a responsible party in the Assembly. "There's only a change in the name and the party flag - the party principles will remain the same, and there is no change in our agenda," he stated.
Meanwhile, PRP official spokesman Vasireddy Padma on Monday resigned from her post and party primary membership. Padma is reportedly miffed at not being nominated for the Legislative Council seat.
In her resignation letter to party President K Chiranjeevi, Padma stated that she resigned from the party because she was unable to digest the PRP-Congress merger.
Chiranjeevi has chosen party leader C Ramachandraiah for the MLC seat.
