Telugu Desam Telangana Forum senior leader T Devender Goud, on Thursday, announced that the TDP will launch a padayatra seeking national status for Pranahita-Chevella projects on the river Godavari.
In a press statement following a meeting of Forum leaders, at the Telugu Desam Legislature Party office, Devender Goud said that the party will initiate a padayatra from the Chevella district to the Adilabad district on 25 January.
He criticized the state government for what he called a failure to mount pressure on the Centre to get the project a national status.
He added that the project has the capacity to satiate the drinking water and irrigation needs of the region.
In light of the goverment's failure, he said, the Forum will take to an agitation until the Centre accords national status to the project.
Goud alleged that the government has spent Rs. 1,120 crore on this project without even preparing a detailed project report.
He demanded to know why the Centre was not according the national status to the state project when projects in Uttar Pradesh could be accorded the status.
The TDP leader called upon all political parties to support the padayatra in an effort to mount pressure on the Centre.
He also appealed to political parties not to politicize the issue for mileage.
Forum convenor Errabelli Dayakar Rao and MLAs from the region were present at the meeting. (INN)
