In a significant move, director of the Sardar Vallabhai Patel Police Academy K Vijay Kumar has been posted as the Director General of Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) on Saturday.
Vijay Kumar will replace Vikram Shrivatsava.
According to analysts, Vijay Kumar's appointment is a sure sign that the Centre is toughening its line over maoists issue, especially after the Dantewada massacre in which 76 CRPF personnel lost their lives. The Home Ministry and the E Rajamohan Commission, which had probed the events and that led to the massacre had pointed out flaws in the CRPF strategy in tackling the maoists.
Vijay Kumar had earlier served in the elite Special Protection Group and was part of the special team to tackle sandalwood smuggler Veerappan. The team managed to kill the sandalwood smuggler in an encounter. He belongs to the Tamil Nadu cadre of the IPS.
