The ongoing agitations by Telangana lawyers at the High Court have taken an unexpected toll on small businesses operating around the High Court.
The protests by the lawyers, who are demanding 42% quota in Judiciary posts for people from the Telangana region, have hit vendors who have set up shops on the main road from Madina Building to the City College, with police diverting traffic almost on a daily basis ever since the turmoil began.
Ganesh, a pushcart chat seller, said that the last 5 days had been terrible from a business point of view. He said that even regular customers were now wary of venturing out on the road.
Ganesh said, "My daily earnings have dropped drastically since the protests began. I was caught unawares by the protest on Tuesday, and that day, my entire stock of chat, samosa and pani puri was wasted since there were no buyers."
Many other petty vendors echo Ganesh's words, and rue the day the protests began.
It isn't just the general public - lawyers, too, would enjoy a quick snack from the many shops or push-carts that had sprung up on the road over the past many years.
Other vendors are feeling the heat, too. A plastic-ware seller said that the police and media vehicles parked on the road were obstructing any prospective customer's view of the shops.
