Stating that he was respecting the Supreme Court verdict on triple talaq, MIM chief and Hyderabad MP Asaduddin Owaisi today nevertheless said that one needed to remember that it was not a unanimous verdict.
It was also not going to be easy for the state governments to implement the verdict given by the Supreme Court at the ground level, he felt.
He made it clear that that was only his party's opinion, and not that of the All India Muslim Personal Law Board.
On Tuesday, the Supreme Court delivered its verdict on triple talaq, an age-old practice in Islam, saying that it was against the rules of the Quran. The main political parties, including the ruling BJP and the main opposition party the Congress, welcomed the Supreme Court verdict. The MIM however reacted to it this way.
BJP state president Dr K Laxman faulted Owaisi for extending indirect support to triple talaq with his comments. He said that there was no triple talaq system even in most Islamic countries, but Owaisi was extending his support to the practice blatantly unfair to women.
Owaisi should not be relating triple talaq with religion, and everyone needed to obey the verdict of the Supreme Court on the issue, he said. He said that the Telangana unit of the BJP was welcoming the verdict of the Supreme Court, and that the verdict was not any individual's or party's victory or defeat but a victory for the self-respect of Muslim women.
Laxman also alleged that Owaisi's remarks on the human bomb attack on Task Force office were "irresponsible". Owaisi showed his parochial attitude through his different stands on the Task Force case and the Malegaon case, he said. An MP must behave constitutionally, he said.
