The month of October seems unlucky for the people living in the coastal Andhra Pradesh region, in terms of weather.
As per the IMD Data, of 73 cyclones that crossed coastal Andhra from 1891 to 2012, as many as 30 were reported in the month of October. A total of 19 cyclones came in November, 9 in May, 8 in September, 3 each in June and December and once in the month of July.
However, the year-wise data from 1915 to 2012 shows that cyclone is a perennial affair for AP. While 3 cyclones hit the coastal Andhra region in 1915 and 1987, there were 2 cyclones each year in 1892, 1904, 1933, 1955, 1969, 1976, 1977, 1979, 1982, 1985, 1989 and 2010. There was only 1 cyclone in the years from 1915 to 2012.
Of 73 cyclones that crossed the coast since 1891, as many as 52 were during the North-East monsoon season. While 12 cyclones were reported during the South-West monsoon, only 9 were reported during summer season.
Out of the 73 cyclones, the Nellore district received the highest (23), followed by Krishna (15), East Godavari (11), Srikakulam (10), Visakhapatnam (7), Prakasam (5) and Guntur (2).
This year the cyclone Phailin is likely to hit the coastal Andhra in the next 48 hours.
Meanwhile, the state is getting ready to face circumstances caused by the impending cyclone. Chief Minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy on Friday reviewed the intensity of the cyclone, preparedness and the measures taken by the various concerned departments. Thousands have been evacuated from low-lying areas.(INN)
