Senior IPS officer C V Anand today formally assumed charge as the Director General of Police (DGP) of Telangana, at the State police headquarters in Lakdi-ka-pul.
During the ceremony, senior officers accorded him a ceremonial guard of honour.
A 1991-batch IPS officer, Anand has previously served as the Hyderabad Commissioner of Police, and has held several strategic positions in policing, technology integration and counter-terror operations.
His appointment comes at a time when Telangana is focusing on modernising its police force and strengthening internal security mechanisms.
Addressing the media soon after taking charge, the DGP issued clear administrative directions, instructing Superintendents of Police (SPs) and Commissioners of Police (CPs) to remain stationed in their respective districts and focus on maintaining law and order.
In a significant administrative reform, Anand abolished the longstanding practice of district officers making courtesy visits to the State headquarters in Hyderabad. He emphasised that officers should avoid unnecessary travel and instead remain accessible to the public in their jurisdictions. He said that interactions with senior leadership could be conducted through virtual means or scheduled visits when required.
Speaking about efficiency and accountability, the DGP said that optimal utilisation of time and public resources would be a priority under his leadership. He said that he would personally visit districts if situations demanded direct intervention.
Focusing on future-ready policing, Anand stressed the need to integrate advanced technologies, including Artificial Intelligence (AI), data analytics and surveillance systems, to counter evolving criminal methods such as cybercrime, financial fraud and organised crime networks.
He also drew attention to staffing challenges, revealing that the Telangana Police currently had around 19,000 vacancies. He called for comprehensive reforms in recruitment, training and capacity-building to strengthen the force and ensure effective service delivery.
The DGP said that his focus would be on maintaining law and order, enhancing public trust and building a technologically robust and responsive police system across Telangana.
