In reponse to accusations that the crackdown on the Telangana Sadak Bandh is a means to hinder the Telangana movement, the police, who have been surprisingly alert to all possibilities, say that the only reason for the heavy opposition is that the bandh is illegal, and has the potential to cause a lot of inconvenience to people.
"We have prepared for all eventualities, and have arrested hundreds of activists, including several key players like Kodandaram and TRS MLA T Harish Rao, so far," said Mahbubnagar district SP Nagendra Kumar, "No government institution, including the police, is ever against a people's movement. We told them [Telangana activists] that they are welcome to hold meetings, dharnas and rallys to publicise their cause, and we will be the first to provide them with protection."
"The sadak bandh is against the law, as ruled by the Supreme Court itself. Blocking the route to Shamshabad Airport, where people might be going to hospitals to seek medical aid, or have other urgent issues to deal with, is not right, and we will not allow it. So far, the traffic has been moving smoothly.
Except for two incidents at Aalampur 'X' Roads and at Nacharam, we have ensured that civilians are not affected as a result of this bandh," claimed the SP.
