Enraged by the tough attitude of the management and the low quality of food served at the hostel, students of the Narayana Junior College in Nizampet ransacked the hostel premises after locking up the staff in a room, on Tuesday night.
The trouble broke out when the warden of the hostel refused to sanction sick leave to a student. Other students then came in support the student and an argument between the students and the warden turned noisy. When the other staff members came to the warden's office, the students locked them all up in the room and went on a rampage on all the three floors of the building.
The unruly students broke the glass panes of windows, and damaged furniture and other equipment. Some of them even tried to throw furniture out of the building. The police, who rushed to the spot upon receiving information, foiled further sabotage by the angry students. The stubborn students pelted stones even at the police when the latter tried to enter the campus, and the police brought the situation under control with much difficulty.
The KPHB police inspector said that the students unnecessarily went berserk. "If they really needed leave and the hostel authorities did not sanction it, they could just have called their parents or the higher officials of the college for the same," he said.
