Tension prevailed at the Secunderabad railway station for a brief period today after the police detained leaders of the BRS while preventing them from reaching the station to press their demand for the formation of a Secunderabad Municipal Corporation.
The rally was scheduled to proceed from the Secunderabad railway station to the Mahatma Gandhi statue on M G Road. As a precautionary measure, the police detained several BRS leaders.
BRS supporters who arrived to participate in the rally were also detained and stopped from moving towards the station.
Despite assurances from BRS leaders that the rally would be peaceful and would not cause inconvenience to the public, the police went ahead with the detentions. Several supporters were taken away in police vehicles.
BRS leaders and workers confronted the police over the decision to block the march, and raised slogans against the Congress government, following which many local businesses, including the iconic Alpha Caf?, downed their shutters.
A heavy police presence was deployed around the station with personnel carrying batons, to ensure that traffic movement remained uninterrupted.
