With just 3 days left for Ganesh Chaturthi, the State Pollution Control Board has intensified its campaign for the use of mud idols for the festival, to prevent pollution.
As part of the campaign, the Special Secretary of the AP Pollution Control Board (APPCB), M C Pargaien, on Monday formally launched the distribution of mud Ganesh idols in a program at his office.
He said the PCB has decided to distribute 5-feet Ganesh idols in the 150 wards in the GHMC limits, as part of its agenda of protecting lakes from pollution.
Pargaien said the PCB would distribute mud Ganesh idols free of cost to those who want to establish pandals in their respective wards.
"The Board shall encourage the associations which use mud idols for the puja," he said.
Apart from 5-feet Ganesh idols, he said, the Board will also sell 50,000 small idols at a subsidized price of Rs. 5 each. The Board will set up counters at all places across the city to sell these idols, he added.
He called upon people to avail themselves of this opportunity and protect the city's water bodies from pollution. He thanked all voluntary bodies, media and association for popularizing the use of mud idols during Ganesh Chaturthi. (INN)
