The city police is all set to revive and revitalize the Lake Policing Project around the Hussain Sagar Lake by bolstering the number of police forces with the introduction of mounted personnel.
Talking to media persons at the Necklace Road, City Police Commissioner A K Khan on Sunday stated that apart from the 8 mounted policemen already on duty, an additional 30 personnel would be patrolling the lake.
The police personnel on patrol duty will also get 3 new motorcycles and 5 bicycles.
The Lake Policing Project was taken up with much fanfare in February 2002 with the objectives of controlling suicides in the area, prevent road accident, improve the flow of traffic, curb eve-teasing, regulate footpath vendors, prevent street prostitution and pimping.
The success of the project was evident by the fact that an average of around 60 suicides were prevented. The police had set up Wireless Surveillance Camera System to monitor activities around the lake.
Following the revival of the policing project, the police department will repair the lake mobile jeep and restart the use of services of speedboat. (This boat has divers and is provided with a wireless set, dragon light and beacon, and will be used to help in preventing suicides as well as any other rescue operation on the lake.)
The police will also install 5 assistance / help booths along the Hussain Sagar Lake. These will be stationed at Lumbini Park, I-Max Rotary, Sanjeevaiah Park, Peoples Plaza and the Tank Bund. They will be manned by police personnel from 4pm to 9pm on weekdays, and from 9am to 9pm on Sundays and holidays.
Apart from this, the department will also install 40 lake police signages and sign boards dotting the lake.
