Several workshops and godowns turned to ashes after a major fire engulfed the Mallepally guild at the Vijayanagar Colony crossroads in Hyderabad on Sunday.
Fortunately, no person was killed or injured in the fire accident. However, the property loss has been enormous, according to the Humayun Nagar police.
Short circuit is suspected to have caused fire in a godown, which consequently led to the explosion of gas cylinders kept in the godown. The fire soon spread to adjacent godowns and workshops. Several small shops, located on the boundary wall of guild, were also gutted in the fire.
15 fire tenders were rushed to the spot while more than 20 water tankers were engaged for refilling.
The fire personnel struggled for more than four hours to put off the fire.
The power supply to the entire area was disconnected to prevent further damage. All the roads leading towards the guild were also closed to the general traffic.
The accident also led to heavy traffic jams on major roads to and from Bazar Ghat, Masab Tank, Mallepally and Vijaya Nagar Colony.
Home Minister Nayani Narasimha Reddy, Nampally MLA Meraj Hussain, Hyderabad Police Commissioner M Mahender Reddy and other senior police officials rushed to the spot and supervised the fire-fighting operations. (INN)
