Madhuri Gupta, who sold to Pakistan India's crucial and privy information she shouldn't have had access to in the first place, showed no remorse in the face of interrogation by the Indian police. She said that she wanted to teach the officials at IFS a lesson, and settle scores with the ill-treatment she was put under.
Gupta had gained access to information such as the Prime Minister's meeting of India's policy over Pakistan. She also knew about India's decision not to resume dialogue with Pakistan.
Denying ever contacting Pakistan's Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI), Gupta said she was only in touch with the Pakistan Inteligence Bureau, that had a Pakistani handler named 'Rana' (an alias). She used her computer at her home to pass on information in the form of mails and messages. When her transcripted phone conversations with Rana were shown to her, she is reported to have asked "What took you so long?"
When asked why she turned traitor when she reached a comfortable position in the Indian Foreign Service, Madhuri, an IFS-B official, reportedly said that she has not done it for money - she wanted to teach the IFS officials a lesson. According to her, "they treat people like dirt."
Madhuri Gupta, who served as second secretary at the Indian High Commission in Islamabad, worked with the Indian Council of World Affairs (ICWA) before she was posted at the Indian High Commission in Islamabad. Sources said she was fluent in Urdu and was "desperate" to go to Pakistan, suggesting that she may have had cross-border links for some time.
Pakistan is said to have targeted Madhuri after she was heard complaining at a cocktail party, and was soon introduced to a Pakistan journalist.
