Telangana IT and Municipal Administration Minister K T Rama Rao today warned that the state government would stop the supply of water and power to the Secunderabad cantonment area.
Speaking during a budget debate in the Assembly on the city's development, KTR took exception to the officials concerned for closing down the roads causing heavy traffic issues for the people.
"The state government has been appealing to the Centre and defence officials to open the roads in the cantonment area for several months. We are now planning to stop supply of water and power to the area. During the rainy season Nadeem colony and other low-lying locations are being submerged, and we are unable to address the issue due to the closure of the roads in the Golconda cantonment area. Our efforts to handle the flooding are failing as ASI officials are declining permission to release water through check dams and downstream. We are also unable to release water from the Shatam Cheruvu area to Golconda downstream again due to lack of permission from the ASI. So we have decided to stop water and power supply to the two cantonment areas," the minister announced.
Accusing the Centre and the defense ministry of an adamant attitude to the state's appeals for the opening of the roads, KTR slammed the Centre for its "supremacy" over Telangana, and said that the government would see how the officials of the Centre and the cantonment would respond to the cutting of water and power supply.
"The cantonment and other officials should cooperate and live together with us. We will not allow them to construct checkdams - hopefully that will make them come down. The officials in the cantonment area in Secunderabad are also not ready to understand the traffic problems. We have appealed repeatedly, and will see if they respond after we stop water and power supply to the areas," he said.
