BRS working president K T Rama Rao visited Kodangal today and named the newborn daughter of Jyothi, a key face of the resistance movement, Bhumi Nayak - translating to "leader of the land".
Jyothi, the wife of a farmer who was allegedly illegally detained, emerged as a symbol of defiance against the Congress government's "forcible" land pooling for pharma companies in Lagacherla, in Kodangal constituency.
The Lagacherla tribal farmers have been resisting what they claim to be the Congress government's coercive attempts to seize their land for industrial purposes. Their protests were reportedly met with a harsh crackdown, with reports of several farmers being tortured in police custody. In what has been described as an abuse of power, Congress leaders, along with law enforcement, allegedly raided tribal homes, harassed families and misbehaved with the women.
At the height of this struggle, Jyothi, pregnant at the time, confronted the government, demanding justice for her husband and her community. Her bold stand made her an icon of the movement, inspiring many with her resilience. Recognizing her courage, KTR and BRS leaders extended their support to Jyothi and the Lagacherla farmers.
Earlier, Jyothi and other affected families had visited Telangana Bhavan, where the BRS assured them of its backing against what they termed as Congress's oppressive actions. Taking the fight beyond the State's borders, Jyothi, accompanied by KTR and other BRS leaders, also met with the SC/ST Commission, the NHRC, and the Women's Commission in New Delhi to bring national attention to their plight.
