The Krishna River Management Board (KRMB) on Friday took a key decision on the allocation of the Nagarjuna Sagar waters to the two Telugu States.
With both States facing drinking water crises, a three-member committee of the KRMB has decided that 14 TMCs of water above 500 feet in the reservoir should be used by the two States for drinking water needs.
Out of these 14 TMCs, 8.5 TMCs have been allotted to Telangana and 5.5 TMCs to Andhra Pradesh.
The members also discussed the previous decision taken by the Committee in October 2023 on the issue of using water for drinking purposes. At that time, 45 TMCs were allotted to Andhra Pradesh and 35 TMCs to Telangana. However, the Telangana government sought the release of another 5 TMCs of water, and asked for the release of the waters immediately. But the Andhra Pradesh government made objections over the demand of Telangana and claimed that Telangana had already used 7 more TMCs of water than it was allocated.
Now, with both the States facing drinking water crises due to drought conditions, Andhra Pradesh has asked the KRMB to release as much water as possible to the right canal of Nagarjuna Sagar Project (NSP) while Telangana has requested for more water to the districts under the left canal, keeping in mind the population of Hyderabad.
With this, the committee headed by KRMB Member Secretary D M Raipure decided to allocate 14 TMCs water to the two States.
Telangana ENC Anil Kumar and AP ENC Narayana Reddy participated in the meeting.
