Party MPs from Andhra Pradesh on Friday met the President of the Congress party, Sonia Gandhi, and informed her about the injustice meted to the state by the Krishna Water Disputes Tribunal verdict.
The MPs urged Sonia Gandhi to intervene in the matter and ensure justice for the state.
The MPs told the Congress President that the verdict would turn the Krishna basin into a desert. They also told her that the future of farmers, and the many prestigious projects currently being taken up in the swath of the Krishna River are at stake.
They stated that the verdict would lead to unimaginable losses and backwardness of farmers and Andhra Pradesh.
They said that the state had suffered serious injustice with the Tribunal permitting Karnataka to raise the height of the Almatti Dam from 519 to 524 metres.
The Congress President listened to the MPs, and assured them that she would look into the issue after holding discussions with the Prime Minister, Manmohan Singh, and the Union Water Resources Minister, Pawan Kumar Bansal.
The MPs also appealed to Sonia Gandhi to grant national project status to the Polavaram irrigation project to be constructed on the river Godavari.
