The University College for Women in Koti will be developed into the Telangana Women's University in the 2018-19 academic year with the approval of Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao.
The college will get a facelift and be developed on par with other universities with autonomous status.
This was stated by Deputy Chief Minister (and Minister for Education) Kadiam Srihari.
Accompanied by a team of officials, Srihari made a surprise visit to the college campus and inspected the facilities. He discussed with the officials the facilities, buildings, infrastructure and faculty, and the steps for upgrading the college into a university.
He directed the officials to submit a report within a month for upgrading the college.
Later, Srihari told the media that the state government wanted to develop the old college into a university to provide better education. The college right now had adequate space thanks to its 40 acres of land, and was located in a prime location, which would help in the upgradation, he said. He said that if the related works were completed on time as per the plan, the college would be upgraded in the upcoming academic year itself. The state government had allotted Rs 37 crores for the development and renovation, and new buildings would be constructed upon getting a detailed report of the recommendations, he added.
The college offered 42 courses at the degree and PG level, and students from 31 districts were studying here, the minister said. Though it had no laboratory facilities as of now, on getting university status it would get laboratories and other top facilities, Srihari said.
Higher Education Commissioner Naveen Mittal, Osmania University Vice-Chancellor S Ramachandram, college Principal Prashant Atma and others were present.
